Sources of Islam

The first question one has to answer as he embarks upon a journey to understand Islam is what sources he should refer to for an authentic and proper understanding of this divine religion. It is this question that Mr Ghamidi addresses in his essay on the sources of Islam.

Principles of Determining the Sunnah

In this essay, Mr Ghamidi expounds upon the principles that a student of Islam must appreciate and keep in consideration when he is to determine the content of religion that has been given to us through Sunnah.

Principles of Understanding the Hadith

What are the principles that we should consider while understanding the Ahadith is the subject matter of this essay of Mr Ghamidi.

What is Riba? -- A Critical Evaluation of its Understanding (1)

As is clear from the title, this essay takes up the issue of riba, its understanding, primarily in the early Muslim history and an evaluation of the basis and methodology employed to arrive at this particular understanding. Of all the critical questions regarding riba, the most important is to discuss the sources from which its understanding is derived. Any difference in the critical appreciation of the Islamic sources of law results in fundamental changes in the viewpoint arrived. Keeping this in perspective, the discussion in the first section of the article focuses on enumeration and a critical evaluation of the sources.

Islamic Political Ethics: Civil Society, Pluralism, and Conflict

To see Islam as compatible with the needs of the modern age underpins the objective of most of the academic works on Islam in recent times. While principal ethics, emphasizing justice, honesty and veracity, remains the same among almost all religions and ideologies, a palpable difference arises in the applied form. Islamic Political Ethics: Civil Society, Pluralism, and Conflict is a collection of essays, of which the main aim is to evaluate what political form the legal and substantive instructions of Islam on political matters takes. Muhammad ‘Ali Sumbal has done a precise analysis of the content of the book to lure the readers into reading it.
