Reliability

Reliability is a trait human beings must try to engender in themselves. It is an indispensable need. The stature of a person is in fact directly proportional to his or her dependability. Such a person is a team-leader’s delight and can be expected to meet all kind of targets and fulfil promises and commitments. A reliable person will never pass on information that has not been verified.

How can we become reliable in our lives? Here are some tips that may help.

Firstly, we must learn to be realistic about our selves and never make a commitment that is beyond our means. In other words, we must learn to say no to what we cannot do. Many a time we try to accommodate demands and requests of people to please them without realizing our own capacity. Later delays occur and give way to denials and ultimately a person ends up cornered and condemned for not honouring his word.

Secondly, we should develop the habit of noting down “things to do.” Many a time forgetfulness is the greatest enemy of reliability, especially if we have many things to accomplish. We should not leave them to our memory for it is liable to falter. Making a list of things that need to be done in our cell-phones can make up for any lapses in memory.

Thirdly, we must take up voluntary responsibilities every now and then to sharpen this trait. There is no better a way to inculcate a good habit than practical training. “Practice makes perfect,” they say and it sure does. This method can specially help parents instructing their children to become reliable and responsible individuals. Thus if they ask them to take up some regular household chores, it will tune them to sharpen this trait.

Fourthly, self-penalization for being unreliable can also help. This should be done when the cause of unreliability is carelessness and indifference. Monetary penalties can serve as a tough reminder as well as a deterrent to be more careful in future.
